West Utica Elementary School

Summary:

West Utica Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 483 students in grades PK-6 in Shelby Township, Michigan, which is part of the Utica Community Schools district. However, the school faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance, high poverty rates, and high chronic absenteeism compared to other schools in the area.

West Utica Elementary has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger and its proficiency rates on state assessments are significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subjects. The school has a very high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 73-79%, which is much higher than nearby schools like Issac Monfort Elementary and Wiley Elementary. Additionally, West Utica Elementary has experienced a sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 14.1% in 2018-2019 to 37% in 2022-2023, significantly higher than the district and state averages.

The performance gaps between West Utica Elementary and the district/state averages have been growing over time, with the school's student subgroups, such as male students, White students, and economically disadvantaged students, all performing significantly worse than their peers at other schools. While West Utica Elementary serves a more racially diverse student population compared to many other schools in the Utica Community Schools district, the high poverty rates, chronic absenteeism, and other factors may be contributing to the school's low academic performance, which will require targeted interventions and support services to address.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The principal is good. Outside greeting kids every day, seems to honestly care.

The parents are horrible. They can't even follow simple instructions for drop off and pick up. Very diverse student body which is good if the parents were a bit more involved and pushed academics, but they seemingly do not.

Seriously considering a move to Wylie. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
