Alice M Birney K8 School

Summary:

Alice M Birney K8 School is a public elementary school in Southfield, Michigan, serving 404 students in grades PK-8. The school is part of the Southfield Public School District, which is ranked 439 out of 610 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Alice M Birney K8 School faces significant challenges, including a predominantly African American student population (95-97%), high chronic absenteeism rates (22-53%), and consistently lower academic performance compared to state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 3rd-grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 37.5%, compared to the state average of 39.6% and the district average of 36.7%. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Michigan elementary schools over the past decade, with similar low rankings for specific student subgroups. Despite higher-than-average spending per student, the academic outcomes suggest that more targeted interventions and strategies may be needed to support student success.

While Alice M Birney K8 School is performing below average, some nearby schools, such as MacArthur K8 University Academy and Adlai Stevenson Elementary School, are performing better academically. This suggests that there may be opportunities to learn from the practices and strategies employed at these higher-performing schools within the Southfield Public School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Birney is a great school. A majority of the teachers are wonderful and very caring. I cannot speak for them all, but a good portion of them are just wonderful. They make every effort to help the children, sometimes they above and beyond the school day. The principals and good to work with. The music department is awesome! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
