Hiller Elementary School

Summary:

Hiller Elementary School is a public elementary school in Madison Heights, Michigan, serving 243 students in grades PK-5. As part of the Lamphere Public Schools district, Hiller stands out for its diverse student population, high chronic absenteeism, and academic performance that lags behind the district and state averages.

Hiller Elementary has a more racially diverse student body compared to nearby schools, with 45.27% White, 20.99% African American, 14.4% Hispanic, and 10.29% Asian students. However, the school has struggled with high chronic absenteeism, reaching 41.6% in the 2021-2022 school year, significantly higher than the 19.5% to 29.8% range of nearby schools. Academically, Hiller's proficiency rates on the M-Step assessment are lower than the Lamphere Public Schools district and the state of Michigan, with 3rd-grade English Language Arts proficiency at 36.6% compared to the district's 44.8% and the state's 39.6%.

Hiller Elementary faces additional challenges, including a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds (75.72% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) and a relatively high per-student spending of $21,448. While the school has a low student-teacher ratio of 13.5, its overall ranking places it in the bottom half of Michigan elementary schools, earning a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Despite these obstacles, Hiller's diverse student population and targeted investments suggest opportunities for improvement with the right interventions and support.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
