Kearsley High School

Summary:

Kearsley High School is a public high school located in Flint, Michigan, serving 887 students in grades 9-12. The school's student population has become more diverse in recent years, with decreases in the percentage of White students and increases in African American and Hispanic students.

While Kearsley High School's performance is generally better than some nearby schools, the school faces several challenges. Its four-year graduation rate has declined from 85.0% in 2019-2020 to 76.7% in 2022-2023, lower than the state average of 80-85%. The school's dropout rate has also increased significantly, from 5.6% in 2018-2019 to 12.7% in 2022-2023, much higher than the state average of 5-7%. Chronic absenteeism has been a major issue, rising from 16.8% in 2019-2020 to 46.7% in 2022-2023, well above the state average of 20-25%. Kearsley High School's test scores, particularly in STEM subjects, are also lower than state and district averages.

However, the school's performance is better than some nearby schools, such as Accelerated Learning Academy and Beecher Alternative Education, which have much lower graduation rates and higher dropout rates. Additionally, Kearsley High School's per-student spending has increased, and its student-teacher ratio has decreased, which may have contributed to some improvements. Addressing chronic absenteeism and supporting underperforming student subgroups could be key focus areas for the school to improve its overall performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Went to this school for all four years, never felt accepted or wanted. Played sports was bullied and teased into quitting. Coaches and teachers are all jokes. Nobody there has much interest in helping, it's like a teenager day care. Most the teachers don't care to teach they just like having power over others and get off on treating students miserably. Takes over 5 mins to get from one class to the other and that you walking straight from door to door, oh teacher doesn't care tardy literally everyday, unless i leave other class early, which of course i can't. So i automatically get Saturday school every week cause of the distance between my classes. Complain to principal nothing i can do, oh it's all my fault? okay i'll just stop going to class, which is what I did. But I'm the student its always my fault I'm too blame, really would have been nice if ANYBODY at this school cared about the students, or education in general. Crap school, crap community, this place needs help. DO NOT send your kids here unless they are straight-a students and/or are popular, Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
