Mark C Roose Elementary School

Summary:

Mark C Roose Elementary School is a public elementary school in Warren, Michigan, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Warren Consolidated Schools district.

The school faces significant challenges, with a diverse student population that is predominantly low-income. Mark C Roose Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 25% of Michigan elementary schools over the past 10 years and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is among the lowest-performing schools in the state. The school's academic performance, as measured by M-Step test scores, is significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 23.2% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 39.6%. The school also experiences high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 15.3% to 60.2% in recent years.

Compared to nearby schools like Schofield Elementary and Hoover Elementary, Mark C Roose Elementary has a more diverse student population, but its academic performance and chronic absenteeism rates are significantly worse. The school's spending per student, while increasing, remains lower than the nearby schools, and its student-teacher ratio is slightly higher, which may contribute to the challenges in student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This School has around 29 Students Per Teacher, and not the 16 that was stated for the Student/Teacher Ratio from 2009-2010. There were around the same amount last year. There was an Elementary School that Closed last Year and those Children were moved to Roose, well at least a big majority of them did. Today, the First Day of School was so unorganized; Parents looking to see where to send their Children at; there wasn't any Teachers out in the back of the Building were the kids would be going in. The Teachers came out way past the start of School and the Bell didn't ring at all. I don't know how the kids are going to get a Good Education, with having that many kids to a Teacher. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
