Crothers Elementary School

Summary:

Crothers Elementary School is a public elementary school in Warren, Michigan, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. With a diverse student population, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Michigan elementary schools and maintains a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Crothers Elementary faces significant challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates, low academic performance across all grade levels and subject areas, and particularly poor outcomes for certain student subgroups, such as African American students, English Language Learners, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 20.4% of 3rd graders, 10.3% of 4th graders, and 38.9% of 5th graders at Crothers Elementary were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 39.6%, 43.3%, and 44%, respectively. The school's performance is generally lower than nearby schools in the Center Line Public Schools district, as well as schools in the Warren Woods Public Schools and Van Dyke Public Schools districts.

The data suggests that Crothers Elementary could benefit from targeted interventions and support to address the specific needs of its diverse student population, particularly for underperforming subgroups. Strategies to improve attendance and engage families could also be crucial in driving academic progress. With a relatively high per-student spending of around $14,800, the school's resources may not be translating into improved outcomes, highlighting the need for more effective and targeted approaches to support student learning and achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My little cousins and my son go here, soon my younger son will too in the fall and in a few years my youngest will too. The teachers really care about education and it's clear it's not about the paycheck. My son is already reading above the average level for a first grader and I firmly believe it's because of his teacher. The principal is amazing too, the kids love him. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
