Seat Pleasant Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Maryland elementary schools, with a ranking between 693 and 805 out of 859 schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on state assessments (MCAP) is significantly below the state and district averages in both mathematics and English language arts across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 8.5% of Seat Pleasant students were proficient or better in mathematics, compared to 24.1% statewide and 10.8% in the district. In English language arts, 17.8% of Seat Pleasant students were proficient or better, compared to 48.4% statewide and 36.1% in the district. The school has a high percentage of minority students, with 62.54% African American and 31.12% Hispanic students, as well as a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 70.69% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

While the nearby schools, such as Columbia Park Elementary, Cora L. Rice Elementary, and Doswell E. Brooks Elementary, also perform below the state and district averages, they generally outperform Seat Pleasant Elementary. Additionally, the public magnet schools in the area, Capitol Heights Elementary and Judith P. Hoyer Montessori, significantly outperform Seat Pleasant Elementary and the other nearby schools on academic assessments. The higher per-student spending at Seat Pleasant Elementary compared to the nearby schools may indicate that the school is receiving additional resources to address these challenges, but the results suggest that these efforts have not yet translated into improved academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Sad to see this school decline. This use to be a model school in PGCPS. Unfortunately because of that the principals are promoted. Give the school some time as this was just the second year with a new principal. Also there were new teachers and other staff brought into the building. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
