Francis T. Evans Elementary

Summary:

Francis T. Evans Elementary is a public elementary school located in Clinton, Maryland, serving grades PK-5 with an enrollment of around 350 students. The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (53.43%) and Hispanic (30%) students compared to nearby schools, Francis T. Evans Elementary consistently outperforms the district and the state of Maryland in both Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) assessments across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in Mathematics and ELA for all grades were 26.5% and 37.8%, respectively, compared to the district's 10.8% and 36.1%, and the state's 24.1% and 48.4%. However, the school's performance is not evenly distributed, as its Hispanic students rank 61 out of 347 Maryland elementary schools, while its African American and low socioeconomic status (SES) students perform relatively poorly, ranking 352 and 485 out of 504 and 546 Maryland elementary schools, respectively.

Despite its overall strong performance, Francis T. Evans Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. This suggests that the school may be facing challenges in effectively serving its diverse student population. Additionally, the school has seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 50% in 2021-2022 to 65.43% in 2022-2023, indicating a growing population of students from low-income families. When compared to nearby schools, such as Benjamin D. Foulois Academy and Imagine Andrews Public Charter, Francis T. Evans Elementary generally outperforms them in test scores, particularly in Mathematics, but some of these schools demonstrate stronger overall performance, suggesting that there may be successful practices or approaches that could be learned from them.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school was one of the worst I have ever sent my children to. The office staff was friendly but the teachers were terrible and students were horrible with very little manners. It has taken us so much time to reverse the negative effects of this place! Close Quote

Open Quote My children have attended F.T. Evans for four years. One has special needs and the other is in the school's Talented And Gifted program - they are on both sides of the spectrum. I only have GOOD THINGS to say about the staff, the principal and their care for my children. The current principal welcomes each child by name every morning. I volunteer several hours a year at the school helping with various programs so I have seen first hand how good & consistently the teachers and students handle themselves. The teachers are professional and the students know how to handle themselves and what is expected of them. The PTA is very active as are the hundreds of parents and volunteers from the base. The Andrew's base school liason is VERY active in the school and works great with school leadership and staff. My children had the opportunity to attend the Andrews charter school on base and we turned it down because of how great the F.T. Evans staff is. If you're from a DoDDs school, keep in mind PG County doesn't have that kind of budget, but that caliber of people. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
