Bond Mill Elementary

Summary:

Bond Mill Elementary is a public elementary school in Laurel, Maryland, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district. With a diverse student population, the school consistently outperforms the district and state in academic assessments, particularly for its African American and Hispanic students.

Bond Mill Elementary's academic performance is a standout, with 49.6% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 19.9% in Mathematics, compared to 36.1% and 10.8% for the district, respectively. The school also performs well in Science, with 24.1% of 5th graders proficient or better. However, the school's English Language Learner students lag behind, ranking 111 out of 115 Maryland elementary schools. Interestingly, while Bond Mill outperforms nearby James H. Harrison Elementary and Oaklands Elementary, it falls short when compared to the higher-performing schools in the neighboring Howard County Public Schools district, such as Hammond Elementary and Laurel Woods Elementary.

Despite its overall strong performance, Bond Mill Elementary has seen a decline in recent years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 181 out of 867 Maryland elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 441 out of 859 in 2023-2024. The school's rating has also decreased from 4 stars to 2 stars during this time. This trend may be attributed to the school's higher proportion of students from low-income families, as indicated by the 49.9% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. Addressing these socioeconomic factors and implementing targeted interventions could be crucial in improving student outcomes at Bond Mill Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is my son's second year with Bond Mill. We both have enjoyed his time there. His 4th grade teacher (Mrs Seide) was amazing with her teaching skills. His 5th grade teacher (Mrs McCargo) is doing a wonderful job with my son's reading comprehension. The principal is wonderful and he seems to know all the students names, The PTO is a great organization as well. I honestly cannot say enough about the school. Everyone has always been welcoming and nice from day 1. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
