Hammond Elementary

Summary:

Hammond Elementary is a public elementary school in Laurel, Maryland, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the highly-ranked Howard County Public Schools district. With a consistent 4-star rating from SchoolDigger, Hammond Elementary is a high-performing school that consistently outperforms state and district averages in Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) assessments.

One of Hammond Elementary's key strengths is its diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is more balanced compared to many nearby schools. The school's student body is 45.01% White, 22.43% African American, 9.37% Hispanic, and 14.59% Asian, reflecting a relatively diverse representation. Additionally, Hammond Elementary demonstrates strong performance across various student subgroups, with rankings in the top quartile of the state, indicating that it is effectively serving the needs of diverse learners. However, the school may need to focus more on supporting economically disadvantaged students, as the "Low Socio-Economic Status" subgroup ranks in the bottom half of the state.

While Hammond Elementary outperforms the state and district averages, some nearby schools within the Howard County district, such as Clemens Crossing Elementary and Fulton Elementary, demonstrate even stronger academic results, particularly in Mathematics and ELA. These schools have proficiency rates that are significantly higher than the state and district, indicating that they may be serving as models for excellence within the region.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is amazing! From the kindergarten observation day to the Open House, and through the 1 month of school, I have attended PTA night and new family night. Teachers are amazing. Administrative are taking good leadership. Even the parents attending those activities are very involved and caring. Overall it's a very good environment for a good child's well being. Parents, the great school rating is not going to lead to an accurate judgement of the best environment for children. Nurturing a child is a long process. Be patient! Life is not just a test the teachers help preparing in the 3rd grade. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
