Greenbelt Elementary

Summary:

Greenbelt Elementary is a public elementary school in Greenbelt, Maryland, serving 573 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district. The school has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of White and Asian students compared to nearby schools, but also a significant percentage of students from low-income backgrounds.

Academically, Greenbelt Elementary performs better than the district average in English Language Arts, but lags behind the state average in Mathematics. The school's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 261 out of 867 Maryland elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 520 out of 859 in 2023-2024. This decline in ranking suggests the school may be facing challenges in maintaining or improving its academic performance. Notably, the school's nearby Dora Kennedy French Immersion and Robert Goddard Montessori schools consistently outperform Greenbelt Elementary, particularly in Mathematics and English Language Arts.

Greenbelt Elementary's data also reveals significant achievement gaps between different racial and ethnic groups, as well as between students from low-income and more affluent backgrounds. Addressing these disparities and the unique challenges faced by the school's high percentage of students from low-income families could be crucial for improving the overall quality of education at Greenbelt Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school overall has extremely poor communication with parents! School buses constantly over 30 minutes picking children up and I'm not only referencing the beginning of the school year and speak of being late up until today. No call or text about the late bus. Parents are expected to call the school who then forwards you to follow up with the bus lot. Glad this will be my child's last year at this school! Close Quote

Open Quote We have been researching this school as we consider options for our 3 year old. Based on recent and very positive reviews of several neighbors and friends with kids at GES, it appears this school has really improved the past few years. The test 2014 scores (well above the state average and on par with many of the better school districts) back this up. In addition to the better scores, they have added more arts and music classes, and parental involvement is quite strong. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
