Walkersville High

Summary:

Walkersville High is a public high school serving 1,213 students in grades 9-12 in Walkersville, Maryland, which is part of the Frederick County Public Schools district. The school has a relatively diverse student population, with a mix of White, African American, and Hispanic students, and has seen fluctuations in its academic performance and statewide ranking over the years.

Walkersville High's academic performance, as measured by Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) scores, has been below the district and state averages in mathematics proficiency, but better in English Language Arts proficiency, especially for 10th-grade students. The school's statewide ranking has ranged from 18th out of 197 Maryland high schools in 2017-2018 to 111th out of 146 in the current 2023-2024 school year, with its SchoolDigger rating varying from 5 stars to 1 star during this period. Additionally, the school has seen an increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 24.69% in 2020-2021 to 33.06% in 2022-2023, indicating a growing population of economically disadvantaged students.

Compared to nearby schools, Walkersville High's academic performance is generally lower than that of higher-performing schools like Urbana High and Middletown High, but it outperforms schools with higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students, such as Tuscarora High and Frederick High. Walkersville High's diverse student population and fluctuating performance suggest that the school may be facing challenges in maintaining a consistently high level of academic achievement and meeting the diverse needs of its student body.

Open Quote Education is poor, the teachers seem more focused on ridiculing students instead of actually teaching the material they get paid to teach. The Principal (Ms. Kibler) is consistently letting the football team off with warnings even when further punishment should be taken. Overall the school doesn't deserve the five stars they received. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
