Mace's Lane Middle School

Summary:

Mace's Lane Middle School is a public middle school in Cambridge, Maryland, serving 481 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Dorchester County Public Schools district, which is ranked 18 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Mace's Lane Middle School faces significant challenges, with a consistently low academic performance that places it in the bottom quarter of Maryland middle schools. The school has a much higher percentage of African American students (62.79%) compared to nearby schools, and its proficiency rates in MCAP/Mathematics and MCAP/English Language Arts are significantly lower than the Dorchester County and Maryland state averages. Despite spending more per student ($14,778 in 2020-2021) than nearby schools like Colonel Richardson Middle School and North Dorchester Middle School, the academic outcomes at Mace's Lane Middle School do not reflect the additional resources.

The persistent low performance and significant achievement gaps between African American and Hispanic students compared to their White and Asian peers suggest that targeted interventions and support may be necessary to address the underlying factors contributing to the school's struggles. Comparing Mace's Lane Middle School to the nearby schools with better academic outcomes, such as Colonel Richardson Middle School and North Dorchester Middle School, provides valuable insights into the potential strategies and approaches that could be implemented to improve the educational outcomes for the students at Mace's Lane Middle School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Looking at Mace's Lane history, you want to cry for anyone and everyone associated with the school. A quick look at their test results shows a 10yr roller coaster from a 2004 grade8 proficiency percentage of 20%, but then over the next 5yrs, ML struggled but climbed to 55% proficiency IN 2009. The next 5yrs with poor administration, hopelessness within the staff, and zero inclination to find a bit of discipline, the school steeply plummeted back down to 25.9% for the grade8 graduates. The School Board unanimously rejected the efforts to bring the Maryland Eastern Shore a charter school that would attempt a more focused agenda. Every year another year's class moves ahead with little if any progress and little hope for improvement. The Board of Education, the administration, and the Maryland State of Education are all to blame. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
