The school has a diverse student population, with 43.86% Hispanic, 27.32% White, and 23.93% African American students, but it has consistently underperformed academically compared to the Anne Arundel County and Maryland state averages.

Annapolis High faces several key challenges. Academically, only 5.4% of its students were proficient or better in MCAP/Mathematics, compared to 25.8% for the county and 23.3% for the state. The school's 10th-grade MCAP/English Language Arts proficiency rate of 45.2% was also lower than the county's 59.6% and the state's 53.5%. Additionally, Annapolis High has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 59.76% in the 2022-2023 school year, significantly higher than nearby schools. When compared to nearby schools, Annapolis High stands out as an underperformer, ranking 98 out of 127 Maryland high schools in the 2022-2023 school year and earning a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. This is in contrast to several nearby schools, such as Broadneck High and Severna Park High, which are ranked among the top schools in the state. Addressing the challenges faced by Annapolis High will likely require a multifaceted approach that considers the unique needs of its diverse student population and the effectiveness of its instructional practices and school leadership.

Open Quote Excellent school. Diversity is a strength. Good programs for all types of students. Our son came from a small private school and is thriving at Annapolis High. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is unfairly rated. Annapolis High is Economically and racially diverse and as such may not "rate" as well according to the statistics used for the ratings on this site. Annapolis High has the IB -International Baccalaureate Program and has a Performing and Visual Arts Magnet as well as AP program. The administration is excellent and the school has so many dedicated and wonderful teachers. Don't take arbitrary ratings as the end all be all. Talk to parents, teachers and students and check out the website or Facebook page to get a better feel. My daughter is a senior at AHS and loves it, she has a diverse group of friends and they are all getting excited about going on to college so far this year we have kids going to top schools in the nation. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
