Turner Elementary Middle School

Summary:

Turner Elementary Middle School is a public school in Shreveport, Louisiana, serving 1,371 students in grades PK-8. The school is part of the Caddo Parish school district, which is ranked 90 out of 122 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Turner Elementary Middle School consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Louisiana elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's performance on LEAP tests is significantly below the Caddo Parish and Louisiana state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. In 2023-2024, only 37% of students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 49% in Caddo Parish and 59% statewide. The school's performance is particularly low for African American and Hispanic students, as well as students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Nearby schools like Werner Park Elementary, Walnut Hill Elementary/Middle, and Forest Hill Elementary generally perform better on LEAP tests and have higher SchoolDigger rankings.

The high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and the school's low performance for subgroups suggest that Turner Elementary Middle School may be facing significant challenges in addressing the diverse needs of its student population. The school's relatively high student-teacher ratio of 20.1 students per teacher in 2022-2023 suggests that there may be opportunities to allocate additional resources to reduce class sizes and provide more individualized attention to students. Targeted interventions and support for underperforming student subgroups could potentially help to improve the school's overall academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The staff at Turner Elementary does not take complaints about bullying serious and will blame those that are bullied. The quality of education is definitely not what I expect out of any school anywhere in the United States. The faculty of this school think they are better than anyone else. This school needs an entire restructuring of it's faculty to increase the quality of education and the school rating. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
