Westwood Elementary School

Summary:

Westwood Elementary School is a public elementary school in Shreveport, Louisiana, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 298. The school is part of the Caddo Parish school district, which is ranked 90 out of 122 districts in Louisiana and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Westwood Elementary faces significant challenges, with a student population that is 92.62% African American, well above the state and district averages. The school consistently underperforms the Caddo Parish and Louisiana state averages in LEAP test proficiency rates across all grades and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 4th-grade math proficiency rate was 39%, compared to 54% for Caddo Parish and 65% for the state. Westwood's student subgroups, such as African American students, special education students, and economically disadvantaged students, rank very low compared to their peers in the state, often in the bottom 10-20% of Louisiana elementary schools. The school has been ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Louisiana, consistently ranking in the bottom 10-15% of schools statewide over the past several years.

The nearby schools in the Caddo Parish district, such as Midway Professional Development Center, Caddo Heights Math/Science Elementary, and Werner Park Elementary, also perform poorly compared to state averages, suggesting systemic challenges within the district. The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students at Westwood Elementary, as evidenced by the free/reduced lunch rate of over 85%, likely contributes to the school's academic struggles. Addressing the needs of this population could be a key focus for improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
