Northwood High School

Summary:

Northwood High School is a public high school in Shreveport, Louisiana, serving 1,068 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Caddo Parish school district, which is ranked 90 out of 122 districts in Louisiana and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Northwood High School has a diverse student population, with 52.25% White, 39.23% African American, and 5.99% Hispanic students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by LEAP/EOC exam proficiency rates, is generally lower than the Caddo Parish and Louisiana state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Northwood's proficiency rates ranged from 27% in Geometry to 60% in English I, while the state averages were 58% and 65%, respectively. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Louisiana high schools, with a 1- or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Northwood High School's performance on various student subgroups is also lower compared to state and district averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's African American students ranked 167 out of 260 Louisiana high schools, and its Hispanic students ranked 100 out of 113 high schools. This suggests that the school may need to address racial equity and opportunity gaps. Additionally, Northwood High School's academic performance is generally lower than the nearby high schools, such as C.E. Byrd High School and Benton High School, which have significantly higher proficiency rates and state rankings.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I found Northwood High School to be an above average school relative to many
of the other schools within that district. However, it left much to be desired
in the areas of cultural enlightenment and diversity awareness. I seem to
remember a distinct seating arrangement during my tenure as a student at
Northwood; one which left me wondering if this was the true face of "integreation" -
that being "separation within integration". All in all, I am glad that I had
an opportunity to experience my time at Northwood High. It certainly gave me
something to talk about as i try so desperately to co-exist with my west coast
colleagues. Liberal is as liberal does... Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
