This school stands out as a top performer within the Jefferson County School District, which is ranked 141 out of 159 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Atherton High consistently ranks among the top high schools in Kentucky, with a statewide ranking between 7 and 31 over the past several years. The school has maintained a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade, indicating exceptional academic performance. Atherton High students significantly outperform their peers in the district and the state on standardized tests, such as the ACT and Kentucky State Assessments (KSA). For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 63% of Atherton High's 11th-grade students were proficient or better in ACT English, compared to 38% in the district and 44% statewide. Additionally, Atherton High has a 93.3% four-year graduation rate, which is significantly higher than the district and state averages.

Atherton High's academic performance stands out when compared to nearby schools in the Jefferson County School District. For instance, Newcomer Academy and Liberty High, which are both within a 3-mile radius, rank significantly lower in the state (286th and 261st, respectively) and have much lower test scores and graduation rates. Despite serving a significant population of economically disadvantaged students, with 39.08% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, Atherton High is able to achieve these exceptional academic outcomes, likely due to its access to additional resources and funding, as well as its low student-teacher ratio of 18:1.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Atherton High School is amazing. Atherton is a 1 big diverse family. Race, sexual orientation, social class, religion, political views and etc do not matter to anyone at this school. Everyone is accepted for who they are. Bullying is not an issue at this school. Education standards are high. Atherton does not offer comprehensive classes unlike most schools. Atherton only has Honors, Ap, and the highest rated education program in the world which is the i.b. program. If your child wants to go to Atherton you should let them. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
