New Highland Elementary School

Summary:

New Highland Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 501 students. The school is part of the Hardin County School District, which is ranked 90 out of 159 districts in Kentucky and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

New Highland Elementary School consistently performs below the Hardin County and Kentucky state averages in most subject areas and grade levels, with only a few exceptions. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 5th-grade students performed better than the district and state in Mathematics and Editing and Mechanics. However, the school's performance in other areas, such as 3rd and 4th-grade Mathematics and 5th-grade Reading, Science, and Social Studies, is significantly lower than the district and state averages. The school also has notable strengths and weaknesses in the performance of different student subgroups, with African American students performing well but Hispanic and Special Education students struggling.

Compared to nearby schools in the Hardin County district, such as Rineyville Elementary and G.C. Burkhead Elementary, New Highland Elementary consistently underperforms, with lower student proficiency rates in most subject areas. This may be due in part to the school's higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which suggests a greater level of economic disadvantage among the student population. While the school appears to be allocating significant resources, with higher spending per student compared to nearby schools, the uneven performance across grade levels and subject areas indicates a need for more targeted and effective strategies to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My great grandchildren came from Nebraska to live with their dad last year. Both children were way behind and tested poorly at the beginning of the 2013 school year. At the end, both received many award medals and their tests scores were high. I can't speak highly enough of both of their teachers and the school. I am so happy they are returning to New Highland this year. The office staff are very helpful also.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
