Peterson Elementary

Summary:

Peterson Elementary is a public elementary school located in Wichita, Kansas, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 354. The school is part of the Wichita school district, which is ranked 252 out of 266 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Peterson Elementary has shown steady improvement in its academic performance and statewide ranking, particularly in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency, outperforming the Wichita district and the state of Kansas. The school's strong performance in certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic and special education students, is a positive indicator. However, the school's relatively high free and reduced-price lunch rate and weaker performance for male and disabled students suggest areas for potential improvement.

Compared to nearby schools, Peterson Elementary performs well but lags behind the higher-performing Maize South Elementary and Apollo Elementary School, which are located in the Maize and Goddard school districts, respectively. These schools have significantly higher proficiency rates and statewide rankings. Peterson Elementary's spending and student-teacher ratio are within the range of nearby schools, but there may be opportunities to optimize these metrics to further support student learning.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My 7 year old went to Peterson Elementary for the 2015-16 school year. She went into 2nd grade still struggling to read fluently. By the end of the school year I was amazed at how well she read! She can read anything now and fluently. A lot of progress for one school year so I was very impressed. Mrs. Waterbury was great! The rest of the staff was very good to us as well. There were several programs and events throughout the school year which continued to keep my little girl excited so that was nice as well. I'd recommend the school to anyone who has elementary level children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
