Clark Elementary

Summary:

Clark Elementary is a public elementary school in Wichita, Kansas, serving 258 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Wichita school district, which is ranked 252 out of 266 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, Clark Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Kansas elementary schools over the past decade, with a current ranking of 638 out of 653 schools.

Clark Elementary faces significant challenges in academic performance, particularly for its most vulnerable student populations. The school consistently underperforms the Wichita and Kansas state averages in proficiency rates for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 12.72% of Clark Elementary students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 19.95% in Wichita and 33.55% statewide. The school's performance is especially concerning for African American, Hispanic, special education, and low-income students, who rank in the bottom 10% and 5% of Kansas elementary schools in these categories.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Wichita district, such as Jefferson Elementary, Beech Elementary, and Griffith Elementary, also perform poorly, with proficiency rates generally below the Wichita and Kansas state averages. However, two magnet schools in the area, Hyde International Studies/Commun Elementary Magnet and Bostic Traditional Magnet Elementary, significantly outperform Clark Elementary and the other nearby schools, with proficiency rates well above the state and district averages.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Clark is an excellent school for children to attend. There is a very diverse group of children and teachers. The last several years Principal Judy Wright was in charge and I can say she was wonderful. The teacher will stand at the door way and great you with a smile. There was a time when they had hot drinks out side when you dropped your children off for school. Ms. Wright ran a tight ship, but I can say if a problem arrised she acted immediately to remedy it fairly with the school policy. She and staff love the children as though they are theirs, so they do their best to make sure our children get the best education. They keep the parents informed by sending reminders and Ms. Wright would us a universal message that would call every parents home to leave a message about any activities coming up at the school. This was VERY helpful and kept busy parents informed one way or another. My children love this school and I think Clark is the BEST and the principal and teachers have been excellent role models for my children. Ms. Wright has been moved to a different school this Fall, but she left a great legacy behind her and I am positive she will impact her new school like she did Clark these last 5 years. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
