Adams Elementary

Summary:

Adams Elementary is a public elementary school in Wichita, Kansas, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 377 students. Unfortunately, this school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Kansas elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger indicating very poor performance.

Academically, Adams Elementary significantly underperforms the Wichita district and the state of Kansas in proficiency rates for English Language Arts and Mathematics across all grade levels. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 12.73% of students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 19.95% in Wichita and 33.55% statewide. The school's performance is particularly concerning in 4th and 5th-grade Mathematics, where only 6.66% and 5.12% of students, respectively, were proficient or better. However, Adams Elementary performs better in the English Language Learner subgroup, ranking in the top 50 out of 124 Kansas elementary schools in 2023-2024.

The school's challenges may be partly attributed to its high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 97.35% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and a high proportion of minority students, with 61% being African American, Hispanic, or Multi-racial. Nearby schools in the Wichita district, such as Spaght Multimedia Magnet, Jefferson Elementary, and Washington Accelerated Learning Elementary, also perform poorly, suggesting systemic challenges within the district. However, there are exceptions, such as Hyde International Studies/Commun Elementary Magnet and College Hill Elementary, which perform significantly better than Adams Elementary and the district average.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I want to clarify something first, I am in no way racist. However, this school has posters all over the place of African Americans people in history such as MLK and others. There are other children in this school that are not African American. School officials should make them feel wanted too. As a Grandparent of a student I walked up and down several halls and looked into classrooms during my visit. There were pictures of Obama but let see isn't Trump our current President. Didn't see his pic anywhere. Music programs are full of religious African music.....again what about the other kids??? Way to go Adams Elementary way to alienate kids. Staff is less educated then the cook at McDonalds. I wouldn't want any kid to have to go to this school in fact I wouldn't send my dog to this school. Get with the program and include ALL your students no matter what color. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
