Turner High

Summary:

Turner High is a public high school located in Kansas City, Kansas, serving grades 6-12 with a total enrollment of 1,171 students. The school is part of the Turner-Kansas City school district, which is ranked 239 out of 266 districts in Kansas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Turner High has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Kansas high schools over the past decade, with a statewide ranking between 276-304 out of 314-327 high schools. The school has maintained a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for most years, with a brief 1-star rating in the 2017-2018 school year. Academically, Turner High's performance is significantly below the state and district averages across all subject areas and grade levels, with only 13.09% of 10th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 27.57%, and just 6.22% proficient or better in mathematics, compared to the state average of 21.31%.

While the school's English Language Learner and Special Education students have shown strong performance, ranking in the top 10-15% and top 25-35% of Kansas high schools, respectively, the school's Low Socioeconomic Status students perform poorly, ranking in the bottom 10-15%. This stark difference in performance between student subgroups suggests that Turner High may need to implement targeted interventions and support programs to address the unique needs of its diverse student population. Additionally, the school's high proportion of economically disadvantaged students, with 62.62% to 71.22% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, may be a contributing factor to its struggles, especially when compared to the higher-performing Shawnee Mission district schools in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school isn't bad but I think most of the problems stem from lazy parents and students. Most don't care or push their kids to do their work and place personal responsibility on their kid to make the best effort. Parents complain when their kid gets called out and argues instead of backing the teacher. There are a ton of opportunities that the kids don't take advantage of that would help them academically. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
