Willow Lake Elementary School

Summary:

Willow Lake Elementary School is a public elementary school in Indianapolis, Indiana, serving 582 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the MSD Washington Township district, which is ranked 201 out of 381 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating.

Willow Lake stands out for its significantly higher percentages of African American (41.92%) and Hispanic (29.73%) students compared to nearby schools, which tend to have a more even racial distribution. The school also faces challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 20.9% to 26.3% over the past three years, and consistently lower proficiency rates on ILEARN assessments compared to district and state averages. For example, in 2023-2024, Willow Lake's English Language Arts proficiency rate was 23.65%, while the district and state averages were 35.3% and 38.6%, respectively. Additionally, Willow Lake has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 43.36% to 75.09% over the past three years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Despite the increase in per-student spending at Willow Lake, from $7,733 in 2019-2020 to $12,912 in 2021-2022, the school's performance continues to lag behind nearby schools within the same district, such as Nora Elementary, Spring Mill Elementary, and Fox Hill Elementary, which have higher test scores, lower chronic absenteeism rates, and more diverse student populations. The school's challenges may require a comprehensive, data-driven approach to address the root causes and implement effective strategies for improvement.

Open Quote My daughter came home and told me that they taught her that "white people are bad." She's never had homework. She's hardly learned anything, and I'd put her education level, as a fourth grader, at somewhere between first and second grade. She says her teachers are mean, and I've only had negative experiences with the staff, who come across as pompous. In third grade, a kid showed her a gun in his backpack on the bus, he said that it was his father's, and the administration did nothing. This school is garbage. Your child's early years are too precious to allow a school like this to waste them. Close Quote

Open Quote My child started Kindergarten in the 2019-2020 school year, which was Willow Lake’s first. Her teacher (Ms. Rybak) is an incredible teacher and handled the pandemic closure as well as any Kindergarten teacher could be expected. My child had really severe separation anxiety the first several weeks of school that she was able to overcome with the help of her teacher and Miss Emily (Yarger). The specials teachers are also very well liked by my child and myself. The principal, Ms. Brown, and vice principal, Mr. Fort, are always friendly and make themselves available to students and parents alike. For Kindergartners, there is a dual language program in Spanish. Every staff member I’ve encountered is someone I’d be happy to have around my child. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
