Summary:

Margaret R Brown Elementary School is a public elementary school in Seymour, Indiana, serving 620 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Seymour Community Schools district, which has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Margaret R Brown Elementary faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools. The school has a much higher percentage of Hispanic students (68.23%) and a very high rate of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (over 80%), indicating high levels of economic disadvantage. Academically, the school consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Indiana elementary schools, with proficiency rates in ILEARN English Language Arts and Math that are 10-20 percentage points lower than state and district averages. The school also has higher chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 12% to 14.6% in recent years, which is above the state average.

While Margaret R Brown Elementary has relatively high per-student spending, the school appears to be struggling to translate its resources into improved student outcomes. Nearby schools within the Seymour Community Schools district, such as Cortland Elementary and Emerson Elementary, have significantly higher academic performance and lower chronic absenteeism rates, suggesting that the challenges faced by Margaret R Brown Elementary may be unique within the district. Addressing these issues will likely require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that focuses on improving educational outcomes for all students, regardless of their racial or economic background.

Open Quote I have been a teacher at this school for 28 years. The students and teachers are amazing. The school has many students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, complicated histories, with many not speaking English when they arrive, but efforts to learn by these students are astounding. They are overcoming life problems that many may never deal with. Before you judge this school by the numbers, please come visit and see for yourselves. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
