Brownstown Elementary School

Summary:

Brownstown Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 635 students in grades PK-5 in Brownstown, Indiana, which is part of the Brownstown County Com School Corp district. While the school has a significantly higher percentage of white students (94.8%) compared to the state average, its academic performance is generally below state and district averages, with lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism rates.

Brownstown Elementary School's test scores in English Language Arts (31.62%) and Math (35.74%) for all grades are lower than the Brownstown County Com School Corp averages (35.84% and 29.86% respectively). Additionally, the school has a higher chronic absenteeism rate (15.2%) compared to the state average and nearby schools, such as Hayden Elementary School and Emerson Elementary School, which have higher test scores and lower chronic absenteeism rates. The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (54.96%) at Brownstown Elementary School may be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance.

Brownstown Elementary School's statewide ranking has steadily declined over the past several years, from 450 out of 1,031 Indiana elementary schools in 2018-2019 to 621 out of 1,010 in 2023-2024, suggesting that the school's performance is not keeping pace with other schools in the state. While the school's student-teacher ratio and per-student spending have fluctuated, these changes do not appear to have significantly improved the school's academic outcomes, indicating that the district and school leadership may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies to address the challenges facing Brownstown Elementary School.

Open Quote People that act as though they really care about the kids and that they actually like their jobs!!! Patient, understanding and willing to help when needed. My son's first elementary school ignored him, made him feel bad and did nothing for him or his self-esteem. The next year at Brownstown Elementary with the help of his teachers, we were able to get him diagnosed with ADHD and put on medication to help him focus. Rather than set him aside, we worked together to help him and he does wonderful in school!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
