Waterloo Elementary School

Summary:

Waterloo Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 220 students in grades PK-5 in Waterloo, Indiana, which is part of the DeKalb County Ctl United School District. Despite spending more per student than the state average, Waterloo Elementary consistently underperforms academically compared to the district and state, with low proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math on state assessments.

Waterloo Elementary faces significant challenges, including high rates of chronic absenteeism (14.7% to 21.9%) and a high percentage of students (over 60%) qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. In contrast, nearby schools like McKenney-Harrison Elementary, Country Meadow Elementary, and James R Watson Elementary have significantly higher proficiency rates, 10-20 percentage points above Waterloo in both English Language Arts and Math. Schools with higher percentages of White students, such as Hamilton Community Elementary (100% White) and Pleasant Lake Elementary (93.7% White), also tend to have stronger academic performance compared to Waterloo.

Despite Waterloo's relatively low student-teacher ratio of 14.4, which is lower than nearby schools, this has not translated into better academic outcomes, suggesting that other factors, such as the high rates of economic disadvantage and chronic absenteeism, may be more influential in the school's performance. Addressing these underlying issues could be key to improving Waterloo Elementary's academic outcomes and providing a better educational experience for its students.

Open Quote I love this school! My daughter is in 1st grade and I have 2 other girls that have gone here as well (they are both grown). Waterloo School puts emphasis on math and reading as early as Kindergarten. My daughter was reading me books in Kindergarten as early as 1 month after starting. My child loves this school and I have not heard anything negative from any of my girls about their experience here. The staff knows each child by name and teaching is personalized. As soon as my child's first grade teacher realized she was ahead of the other students in math she gave her different homework from the other kids to challenge her. The school also has many other extra curricular programs as well, including art, computers and music among others. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
