Thurgood Marshall Elementary

Summary:

Thurgood Marshall Elementary is a public elementary school in Rockford, Illinois, serving 365 students in grades 1-4. Despite being part of the low-performing Rockford School District 205, Thurgood Marshall has consistently been one of the top-performing elementary schools in the state, with a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Thurgood Marshall Elementary's academic performance is exceptional, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics far exceeding the district and state averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's ELA proficiency rate was 96%, compared to 23% for the district and 41.2% for the state. Similarly, the school's Mathematics proficiency rate was 97%, compared to 12.8% for the district and 28.4% for the state. The school also ranks among the top Illinois elementary schools for various student subgroups, including female students, male students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Thurgood Marshall Elementary's success is further highlighted by its low chronic absenteeism rates, which range from 2.2% to 23.5%, in contrast with the much higher rates at nearby schools like R.K. Welsh Elementary, which reached 57.6%. The school's high per-student spending, above the district average, may contribute to its academic achievements, as may its effective teaching practices and supportive learning environment. The stark contrast between Thurgood Marshall's performance and that of other schools in the district underscores the potential for significant variation in educational outcomes, even within the same district, and the importance of identifying and replicating the successful practices employed at Thurgood Marshall Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter was at Washington from first- fifth grade. She received an amazing education, went to school with great kids, and the teaching staff was outstanding and committed. The only bad spot was they were not given the same technology the rest of the district was given and he PTO had to work hard to fund the school to district levels. Special shout outs to Mrs. Woodin, Bubnack, Johnson, Wallace, Worly, and Cejka. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
