Proviso West High School

Summary:

Proviso West High School is a public high school located in Hillside, Illinois, serving 1,868 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Proviso Township High School District 209, which is ranked 628 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Proviso West High School consistently ranks in the bottom half of Illinois high schools, performing significantly lower than the state averages in key subjects like SAT Mathematics, SAT English Language Arts, and ISA Science. Compared to other schools in the district, Proviso West lags behind Proviso East High School and is significantly outperformed by the top-performing Proviso Math and Science Academy. The school's four-year graduation rate of 83.8% is lower than the state average, and its dropout rate of 3.3% is higher. Additionally, Proviso West has a very high chronic absenteeism rate of 75.7%, which is significantly higher than the state average and other schools in the district.

Proviso West High School serves a predominantly African American (56%) and Hispanic (41%) student population, with 22.27% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite the school's higher spending per student and lower student-teacher ratio compared to the state and district, the significant performance gaps and socioeconomic challenges suggest a need for targeted interventions and support to address the root causes of the school's academic struggles and improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was on the original faculty in 1958. I taught general science and coached freshman football and wrestling. I think it was a very good school with a great student body. We returned in 1991 for a family funeral and visited with some of the faculty at the school. I was impressed with the growth of the school in size and reputation -- impressions re-enforced while visiting with the Assistant Principal of Oak Park River Forest HS in October 2010. Open Quote This is one of the worst educational facilities that I have ever attended. The teachers are one of the best examples that any parent can ask for, but the fact that the students and the school board only care about the "reputation" (if we have one) that they are willing to spend unnecessary amount of money on trash cans instead of supplies. The violence of this school is more of a cruel joke of a prison. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
