Mollison Elementary School

Summary:

Mollison Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 267 students. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 688 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Mollison Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Illinois elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Mollison Elementary School faces significant challenges, including extremely high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 48.9% to 59.9% in recent years, well above the district and state averages. The school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) exams, is consistently well below the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 0-19% of Mollison students were proficient or better in ELA and Math, compared to 21.3-49.9% for the district and 30.6-49.9% for the state. Additionally, Mollison Elementary School has a very high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic status backgrounds, with 84.35% to 95.51% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in recent years.

When comparing Mollison Elementary School to the nearby Bronzeville Classical Elementary School, which is less than a mile away, it is clear that Mollison is an outlier in terms of academic performance and other key metrics. Bronzeville Classical Elementary School consistently ranks in the top 5% of Illinois elementary schools and has significantly higher proficiency rates in ELA and Math. The extremely high chronic absenteeism rates at Mollison Elementary School appear to be closely linked to the school's poor academic performance, suggesting that addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism could be a key strategy for improving student outcomes. Despite the school's poor performance, Mollison Elementary School has relatively high per-student spending, raising questions about the effective allocation and utilization of resources to support student learning and achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The leadership in the school is poor. You can feel the dishonesty with the leader and how the principal does not put the teachers and students first. She makes false promises, doesn't support parents and if you disagree with her you are basically punished or shunned from the school. She only allows "yes" people in her circle but if you are not her "buddy", you will get the not real smile. School is dirty and doesn't have a place for parents to go for support. It's loud in the office and very unprofessional with yelling and loud laughter when you enter the school. You only have a few smiling teachers who look like they want to be there. It's dad. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
