Ponderosa Elementary School

Summary:

Ponderosa Elementary School is a public elementary school in Meridian, Idaho, serving 428 students in grades PK-5. While the school is part of the highly-ranked Joint School District No. 2, it faces some challenges compared to nearby high-performing schools.

Ponderosa has a higher percentage of White students and a lower percentage of Hispanic students compared to the state average. It also has a higher chronic absenteeism rate and lower test scores in math and English language arts than the district and state averages. Additionally, Ponderosa has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch and a higher student-teacher ratio than some nearby schools, such as Paramount Elementary and Prospect Elementary. These nearby schools have significantly higher test scores, lower chronic absenteeism, and lower free and reduced lunch rates compared to Ponderosa.

Ponderosa's racial diversity has also declined in recent years, and the school's performance has fluctuated, ranging from 65th out of 188 Idaho elementary schools in 2021-2022 to 130th out of 301 in 2023-2024, with a consistent 3-star rating from SchoolDigger. While Ponderosa's female students have performed better than male students, the school's performance for low socioeconomic status students has been more average compared to other Idaho elementary schools. To improve student outcomes, Ponderosa may need to focus on addressing these areas of concern and learning from the successful practices of the higher-performing schools in the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote i went to school hear for 5 years. (K-4) Then i moved to Nebraska, where my grades improved drastically. I am now a Freshman in high school, and I wish I had gone to Hyannis Area Schools all my life. In bigger schools, they just push you through like a bunch of sheep, at my school, the teachers come to games, know your parents, and maybe even went to school with your grandparents. Also, in smaller schools, you don't have to worry about drugs or alcohol that much.
Thank you for your time,

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
