Irving Elementary School

Summary:

Irving Elementary School is a public elementary school in Sioux City, Iowa, serving 634 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Sioux City Community School District, which is ranked 269 out of 309 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Irving Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the district and state in standardized test scores, with only 43.3% of 5th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 61.4% in the district and 69% statewide. The school has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 90.98% to 93.53% over the past three years, significantly higher than the surrounding schools. As a result, Irving Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Iowa elementary schools, with a ranking between 514 and 537 out of 557-565 schools in the state for the 2023-2024 school year.

In contrast, Sunnyside Elementary School, a nearby school, consistently ranks in the top 5-10% of Iowa elementary schools and outperforms the state and district averages by a significant margin. This stark difference in academic performance suggests that there may be inequities in resource allocation and support provided to the schools within the Sioux City Community School District, which could be crucial in improving the educational outcomes for students at Irving Elementary.

Open Quote My little sister goes to Irving Elementary and this school offers various ways of teaching. My sister got accepted into this school, living on the other side of town; because of her advanced learning. They offer Spanish to the students. How this works is a very complex way of teaching. At the beginning of the day, the students who are immune to English learn everything in the morning (in English), and the students who speak Spanish learn everything in Spanish. After lunch they switch rooms and learn what they learned earlier that morning, but in a different language. I would reccomend this school to anyone who is looking for a good school and environment for their daughter/son. Thank you for reading. Rock on Irving!! :) Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
