The school has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is performing significantly below average. This is due to the school's low test scores, with only 11.2% of 3rd graders proficient in ELA and 12.4% proficient in math, compared to 23.6% and 38.4% statewide, respectively. Additionally, the school has an extremely high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 81.07% to 84.95%, significantly higher than the state average.

Open Quote This is my daughters first year in west Newton elementary. Literally 1st year my daughter attended school and was the worst experience! My daughter is a bus rider . We’re literally half way done with school and they have the audacity to loose my child and sends her in a different bus route ! While I was waiting for her I notice she doesn’t come out her bus ! I ask the bus driver ! She say she doesn’t know . I call the school. They don’t pick up the phone . I call my husband and he is calling as well and they never answer . Luckily I had my husbands car at the time . I go to school and i notice there is about four women in the office . But yet no answer ! I ask in the front door where is my daughter . A teacher comes out saying that her teacher mrs . Watkins assumed she was in the Latino bus 317 just because of my daughters ethnicity! So they were going to send my daughter to a trailer park across the street because of her being Latina. How can someone assume that of a child and why are teachers assuming where the kids live by the color of their skin? Mr. Lindsay asked me if I needed Mrs. Watkins to come talk to me! I told him no I don’t need her to say anything to me and proceeded to leave ! This School should be ashamed of theirselves nobody has reached out to me the principal hasn’t reached out to me or anything has been done! Literally the worst experience in my life and I wouldn’t want this to ever happen to any mother ! Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers are very young and don't seem to have any patients with the students. I attended a field trip with my child and they yelled at the students the entire time. That's not positive reinforcement at all. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
