Wynnton Elementary School

Summary:

Wynnton Elementary School is a public elementary school in Columbus, Georgia, serving 338 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Muscogee County School District, which is ranked 155 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio and increased per-student spending in recent years, Wynnton Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages on standardized tests. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts was 32.7%, 31.1%, and 39%, respectively, compared to the Muscogee County averages of 29.1%, 26.4%, and 37.3%, and the Georgia state averages of 38.4%, 37%, and 48.2%. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 96.45% to 96.6% over the past few years.

Interestingly, Clubview Elementary and Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy, both within the same Muscogee County district, have significantly higher academic performance on the Milestones Assessments across all grade levels and subject areas. This suggests that Wynnton Elementary may benefit from more targeted interventions and support, such as specialized teacher training, evidence-based instructional programs, and comprehensive student support services, to address its persistent underperformance.

Open Quote Reading program is atrocious. There is a one size fits all mentality. There are many children in the fourth and fifth grades who cannot read, that are given the same work as children who read on a high school level, expecting the same result. Common Core is not being followed according to state guidelines. Administration unreceptive. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
