Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy

Summary:

Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy is a public elementary school in Columbus, Georgia, serving 325 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Muscogee County School District.

Despite having a very high percentage of students from low-income families, ranging from 96.54% to 96.62% over the past few years, Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy consistently outperforms the Muscogee County and Georgia state averages in English Language Arts and Mathematics on the Milestones Assessments. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 47.2% of 5th-grade students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 37.3% in Muscogee County and 48.2% statewide. The school also has a higher per-student spending of $12,500 in the 2018-2019 school year, compared to $9,826 to $12,635 for the nearby Rigdon Road Elementary, River Road Elementary, and Brewer Elementary schools.

The higher per-student spending and lower student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12:1 to 14.7:1, may contribute to Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy's stronger academic performance. As a magnet school, it may also attract a more engaged and motivated student population, further enhancing its success. The nearby schools have significantly lower test scores and higher percentages of students from low-income families, highlighting the disparities within the Muscogee County School District.

Open Quote I don't know who rated this school but let me tell you what i've seen after traveling all over the world with the military...These are some of the best teachers & educators who are willing to go above and beyond for these kids. My daughters teacher made poodle skirts for their 50th day of school and celebrated the 50"s. they were amazing made out of felt. No one in all the years that i've had children in school. Ms. Heath is so talented as a teacher. Love Love Love the teaching ability of this school. They are strict but this is what it takes to have children excel. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
