Jackson Road Elementary School

Summary:

Jackson Road Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 363 students in grades PK-5 in Griffin, Georgia, which is part of the Griffin-Spalding County School District. Unfortunately, the school consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages on academic assessments, ranking among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Georgia.

Despite spending above the district average, with per-student spending ranging from $9,551 to $10,084 over the past 3 years, Jackson Road Elementary has struggled to improve student outcomes. Only 23.6% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts in 2023-2024, compared to 18% for the district and 38.4% for the state. The school's performance is particularly low in mathematics, with only 12.7% of 3rd graders and 42.6% of 5th graders scoring proficient or better. This consistent underperformance has resulted in the school maintaining a 1-2 star rating from SchoolDigger, placing it between 690-937 out of 1,200-1,250 Georgia elementary schools over the past 10 years.

One factor that may contribute to the school's challenges is its extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 73.98% to 98.35% over the past 3 years. This suggests Crescent Road Elementary, located just 2 miles away, serves a significantly different population, with much higher proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics, as well as a higher statewide ranking. Addressing the systemic issues and resource allocation at Jackson Road Elementary School will be crucial to improving student outcomes and providing a high-quality education for the community.

Open Quote I’d have chosen no stars, had this been an option..

We pulled our son from Jackson Rd Elementary, the Spalding County Public school system a month ago. He started pre k this year. Our first conference was called after he first week was even up (🙄). No time to adjust. Instead of starting with positive points, things he excelled at, his strong points, they jumped straight to the problems. They made it clear that they weren’t 100 sure how to approach the situation and neeeded our help ( this I understood, working together). Later on, The teacher often embellished situations, and when I’d ask for clarification, baffled that this was our son she was describing, I’d often get “Well.. maybe I shouldn’t have said it happened like that. Thats not exactly right..” I have proof of these correspondences.. When I finally told the principal how I felt, in tears at pick up, telling her I felt like he was just a burden, that he wasn’t wanted, and we were considering enrolling him into a private institution where his needs would be better met. She looked to the sky then to her right at her assistant or witness (almost like rolling her eyes, thinking, of my gosh.. do you hear this crazy woman??) Then said “I’m sorry you feel that way” AND WALKED OFF!!! No apology, no trying to work through it. Had I been in her position and saw a visibly shaken, distraught, and frustrated parent, I would have moved mountains to make her feel better about her son’s educational needs and our ability to facilitate them.. I would have asked the parent to come with me immediately to my office so we could sit down and make this work.

I got none of that. This encounter just verified that they didn’t want to deal with our son, and brushed us under the proverbial rug.

We had our son evaluated the following Monday they said he was hyper, had difficulties focusing but they weren’t prepared to place a medical diagnosis such as ADD:ADHD or autism. And that with the right tools, mentors, and setting he could eventually acclimate and thrive.

This was the first school setting he had been in. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
