Vickery Mill Elementary

Summary:

Vickery Mill Elementary is a public elementary school located in Roswell, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 438. The school is part of the Fulton County School District, which is ranked 57 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending compared to nearby schools like Northwood Elementary, Sweet Apple Elementary, and River Eves Elementary, Vickery Mill Elementary has consistently underperformed in academic metrics, with lower proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science across grades 3-5 compared to the Fulton County and Georgia state averages. The school's 2-star rating from SchoolDigger and ranking in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools further highlight the need for improvement in academic outcomes.

The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Vickery Mill Elementary, significantly higher than nearby schools, suggests that the school serves a population with lower socioeconomic status. This, combined with the school's underperformance, indicates that factors beyond just resource allocation may be contributing to the challenges faced by Vickery Mill Elementary. The data suggests that the school could benefit from a closer examination of its instructional practices, curriculum, and support systems to better serve its student population and improve its academic standing.

Open Quote This school has terrible parent to staff communication !
My child was in 2 bus accidents with this school needing medical attention and they were not going to communicate it had my child not had a cell phone. They actually sent a letter out stating everything was ok and no one was hurt.

They also instead of voicing and discussing personal parental concerns they communicate with DEFCS and make you and your family have to deal with child services. As opposed to trying effective communication between school and home ! The principal is leaving, which leads me to believe even more bad things about the staff. The school is great only if you are Hispanic. DO NOT MOVE IN THIS DISTRICT.

The classrooms teach more English to the non speaking than the time on educational studies. My child always complained that the teachers were mean and always yelling at her, and she also frequently complained of bullying by groups of kids that did not speak English. Close Quote

Open Quote We've had a great experience at VME. Our youngest son started last year during the school's inaugural year. We have two years of fantastic, experienced teachers. I think it will take a while for the overall test scores to see the benefit of the school's efforts but we are happy and our son is coming out of his shell. Additionally, the PTA is pretty amazing for a new school. The Dad's group is a visible, energetic group and the PTA is welcoming of the school's diverse population. It's truly a place where you feel community. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
