Arnco-Sargent Elementary School

Summary:

Arnco-Sargent Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Newnan, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 373 students. The school is part of the Coweta County School District, which is ranked 44 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's higher per-student spending and lower student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools, Arnco-Sargent Elementary consistently underperforms the Coweta County and Georgia state averages in the Milestones Assessments for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 3rd grade proficiency rates were 29.7% in ELA (vs. 49% for Coweta County and 38.4% for Georgia), 56.8% in Math (vs. 53.6% for Coweta and 45.4% for Georgia), and its 5th grade proficiency rate in Science was 30.8% (vs. 48.8% for Coweta and 41.7% for Georgia). Additionally, Arnco-Sargent Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 59.9% to 64.08% over the past few years, which is much higher than the district and state averages.

These factors suggest that Arnco-Sargent Elementary School faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, socioeconomic factors, and resource allocation. To address these issues, the school and the Coweta County School District may need to implement targeted interventions, explore best practices from higher-performing schools in the area, and ensure that resources are being utilized effectively to support student learning and achievement.

Open Quote The teachers do a great job. The problem is with discipline not being handled properly, which in turn affects the learning environment. Good students are struggling to learn due to all the disruptions in the classroom. It is all about the administration in the building turning their heads, allowing disruptions to continue, and rewarding bad behavior. There is a reason so many teachers have quit at this school in the past 2 years. The county needs to dig a little deeper into the problem. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
