Western Elementary School

Summary:

Western Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Newnan, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 437 students. The school is part of the Coweta County School District, which is ranked 44 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Western Elementary School has shown a mixed performance on the Milestones Assessment, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics generally higher than the state averages but often lower than the Coweta County district averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade English Language Arts were 47.9%, 50%, and 59.6%, respectively, compared to the Coweta County averages of 49%, 42.7%, and 57.4%. In Mathematics, the school's proficiency rates were 54.2%, 66.7%, and 57.9%, compared to the Coweta County averages of 53.6%, 57.3%, and 46%. The school's performance in Science for 5th grade was also higher than the state average, with a proficiency rate of 56.1% compared to the Georgia average of 41.7%.

When compared to other elementary schools in the Coweta County district, Western Elementary School's academic performance is generally lower than the top-performing schools, such as Brooks Elementary and Northside Elementary. However, the school's performance is still better than some of the lower-performing schools in the district, such as Jefferson Parkway Elementary and Atkinson Elementary. The school's inconsistent ranking and rating history, as well as the relatively high percentage of students from low-income families, suggest that the school may face challenges in addressing the diverse needs of its student population.

Open Quote I am so disappointed this year. The children are missing the teacher time between the student and the teacher. As a parent I have noticed this a lot this year. I just want my child to receive the best education while there. This year has been well WHEW!!! Sometimes I just want to transfer my child to another school. Close Quote

Open Quote We have been enrolled at Western for 3 years and have had no complaints about the teachers. Both of my children have excelled in their reading and math. My only issue is a more county-wide problem; the art teachers are not fully funded by the county; therefore, Western does not have a full time art teacher. Close Quote

Open Quote Western Elementary is a wonderful school! The teachers are excellent role models for our children. They are Ioving and caring. They teach with knowledge and ability. My 4th grader has loved each and everyone one of her teacher and I love the fact that every staff member goes out of their way to get to know each student. The principal is amazing! She is there to help the children succeed and grow with kindness and a firm hand. I have truly enjoyed the experience that we have had so far at Western Elementary!!! Thank you, thank you for everything! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
