Cartersville High School

Summary:

Cartersville High School is a public high school serving 1,398 students in grades 9-12 in Cartersville, Georgia, which is part of the Cartersville City School District. The school has maintained high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 89.2% to 91.3% over the past five years, which is strong compared to the state average. However, its performance on standardized tests has been mixed, with higher proficiency in Biology but lower scores in Algebra I and U.S. History compared to state and district averages.

Cartersville High School has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 35.55% to 44.85% over the past three years, suggesting a higher proportion of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This, coupled with the school's declining statewide ranking from 89 out of 435 Georgia high schools in 2014-2015 to 197 out of 458 in 2023-2024, indicates that the school may be struggling to keep pace with improvements in other high schools across the state. When compared to nearby high-performing schools like Kennesaw Mountain High School and Harrison High School, Cartersville High School generally performs at a lower level.

Despite the challenges, Cartersville High School has managed to improve its student-teacher ratio from 20.1 in 2020-2021 to 15.6 in 2022-2023, which could have a positive impact on the learning environment and student outcomes. The school's spending per student has decreased from $8,383 in 2016-2017 to $8,202 in 2018-2019, which is slightly below the state average. The district may need to explore targeted interventions and support systems to help improve student outcomes, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
