George W. Marks Elementary School

Summary:

George W. Marks Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Deland, Florida, with a student population of 743 that is predominantly White and Hispanic.

While the school has seen increased per-student spending, from $8,842 in 2019-2020 to $11,148 in 2022-2023, its academic performance remains below the district and state averages. George W. Marks Elementary has significantly higher chronic absenteeism rates, rising from 12.0% in 2019-2020 to 26.0% in 2022-2023, compared to the Volusia district and state averages of 27.8% and 25.4% respectively in 2021-2022. Additionally, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math are 4-8 percentage points lower than the Volusia and Florida averages. The school also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 57.45% to 74.27% over the past three years, significantly higher than the district and state averages.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Ivy Hawn Charter School Of The Arts, which is located just 6.25 miles away, George W. Marks Elementary consistently underperforms, with proficiency rates that are 10-20 percentage points lower across grade levels and subject areas. The high chronic absenteeism rates at George W. Marks Elementary may be linked to the school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, and the effectiveness of the school's resource allocation is also a concern, as the higher per-student spending has not translated to improved student outcomes.

Open Quote Instead of focusing on fixing problems that matter like the terrible pick up line, the staff rather harass you about parking on the other side where there are no 30 minute lines and tell you not to drop your child off on that side because that whole parking lot with cars parked in it (as we speak) is strictly for the school buses (ironic). About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
