Lake Mary High School

Summary:

Lake Mary High School is a public high school serving 2,684 students in grades 9-12, located in Lake Mary, Florida, which is part of the highly-ranked Seminole County School District.

Lake Mary High School stands out for its diverse student population, with a higher percentage of White (51.9%) and Hispanic (29.36%) students compared to nearby schools. The school has consistently maintained high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 92.1% to 97.4% over the past few years, outperforming the state and district averages. However, the school has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism rates, reaching 37.6% in 2022-2023, which is still lower than the rates at Winter Springs High School (39.2%) and Seminole High School (38.0%). Lake Mary High School's test scores, particularly in Biology 1 and US History, are generally higher than the state and district averages, but its performance in Algebra 1 and Geometry is lower than the state and district averages.

Interestingly, while Lake Mary High School performs well in many areas, it lags behind the nearby Crooms Academy of Information Technology, a magnet school within the same district, in terms of test scores and graduation rates, despite having a more diverse student population. Additionally, Lake Mary High School has a relatively lower percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (41.8%) compared to some nearby schools, such as Seminole High School (53.12%) and Elevation High School (68.45%), suggesting that the school may serve a more affluent student population, which could have implications for resource allocation and support for students from lower-income backgrounds.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
