Little River Elementary

Summary:

Little River Elementary is a public elementary school in Orlando, Florida, serving 380 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Orange County School District.

While Little River Elementary shares a similar demographic context with nearby schools, its academic performance and other key metrics are generally lower. The school has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (63.95%) compared to surrounding schools, which range from 33.13% to 82.01% Hispanic. Academically, Little River's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math are notably below the Orange County and Florida averages. Additionally, the school has experienced a sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 18.3% in 2018-2019 to 35.7% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the 25.7% to 46.4% range of nearby schools.

While the school and district have increased spending per student at Little River Elementary, from $10,085 in 2020-2021 to $13,283 in 2022-2023, the school's statewide ranking has steadily declined over the past several years, from 1322 out of 2118 Florida elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 1724 out of 2256 in 2023-2024. This suggests that the school's performance has not kept pace with other elementary schools in the state, despite the increased investment. Nearby schools like Lawton Chiles Elementary and Deerwood Elementary have significantly higher proficiency rates and lower chronic absenteeism, indicating that more targeted interventions may be needed to improve outcomes for the students at Little River Elementary.

Open Quote The school seems underemployed. When I drop off my child in the mornings, there is NO teacher present on most days leaving the child to walk alone into the school. Also, at dismissal parents have a green pass with the child's name which is supposed to be taken out prior to pick up, however, most days there are NO teachers walking the children to the cars leaving the children to walk to the cars alone and the majority of the time the ladies outside do not check for the green pass. This school needs to improve their security and have more teacher presence outside the school in the mornings and afternoons. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
