Tangelo Park Elementary

Summary:

Tangelo Park Elementary is a public elementary school in Orlando, Florida, serving 457 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Orange County School District, which is ranked 31 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Tangelo Park Elementary stands out from nearby schools in several key ways. It has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (63.68%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 5.41% to 66.82%. The school also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 43.1% to 43.9%, much higher than the 18.3% to 41.2% range of nearby schools. Tangelo Park's test scores are consistently lower than the Orange County and Florida state averages, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math 20-30 percentage points below the district and state. Additionally, Tangelo Park has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 76.53% to 82.71%, significantly higher than the 31.35% to 75.4% range of nearby schools.

Interestingly, Tangelo Park Elementary's performance, as measured by its statewide ranking and SchoolDigger star rating, has declined over the past decade, dropping from a ranking of 618 out of 1,984 Florida elementary schools and a 3-star rating in 2011-2012 to a ranking of 1,601 out of 2,256 schools and a 1-star rating in 2023-2024. While the school shares the same district and overall rating as nearby schools like Bay Meadows Elementary, its student population, test scores, and other key metrics are significantly different, suggesting that the high rates of poverty and chronic absenteeism may be contributing factors to the school's lower academic performance compared to its peers.

Open Quote My child goes here. I can honestly say that I am in awe of the schools renovation. I know it's been a "A" school for a while. My child personally loves it there. The teachers are passionate and encourage parents to their part also. Which in my opinion is great. The principal is a great woman who is bilingual and very understanding. The school is genuinely a warm safe place. The neighborhood used to be bad but it has changed over past decade. It is a great neighborhood now and has been sponsored by Mr. Harris Rosen for a while. I highly recommend any parent who wants exceptional education for their child to tangelo park elementary. You have to see it with your own eyes to believe me. Based on the record the neighborhood had it can be a bit unbelievable how night and day this neighborhood has transformed.and the school essentially Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
