New Springs Schools

Summary:

New Springs Schools is a public charter elementary and middle school in Tampa, Florida, serving 397 students in grades K-8 with a diverse student population.

New Springs Schools consistently outperforms the Hillsborough district and the state of Florida in End of Course (EOC) exams for Algebra 1 (93% proficient) and Geometry (90% proficient), but struggles in Statewide Science and English Language Arts assessments. The school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 9.7% to 17.2% over the past few years, which is notably higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, New Springs Schools has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 98.88% to 100% over the past three school years, significantly higher than nearby schools like Legacy Preparatory Academy and Excelsior Prep Charter School.

Despite the school's strong performance in certain test areas, New Springs Schools has seen a steady decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from 664 out of 2,087 Florida elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 2,110 out of 2,256 in 2023-2024. This suggests that the school may be struggling to keep pace with other schools in the state. However, New Springs Schools does have a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 14 to 15.4 over the past three school years, which could be a contributing factor to its strong performance in certain test areas. The school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch also suggests that it may be serving a population with significant socioeconomic challenges, which could be a contributing factor to its lower performance in certain areas.

Open Quote Great STEM focused school for the area. I had my student here since Kindergarten. She has been excelling in reading. And she is learning English since she was 3 years old. If your student is bilingual, this school is perfect to close the gap. They have students from all backgrounds. I hear many parents from other schools whose kids are being bullied. At this school, my child feels safe for years. Teachers are caring and they communicate well. My child participated in Spelling Bee, Battle of the books etc. They also have Robotics, Science olympiad and other STEM teams as well as sports teams. Not the best fields for outside play and PE but academically, they are strong. Warning: discipline policy is strict. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
