Kimbell Elementary School

Summary:

Kimbell Elementary School is a public elementary school in Tampa, Florida, serving around 350 students in grades PK-5. As part of the Hillsborough School District, which is ranked 45 out of 68 districts in the state, Kimbell has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Florida elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Kimbell Elementary stands out from nearby schools like Foster Elementary, Robles Elementary, and Sheehy Elementary in several key ways. It has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (53-58%) and a lower percentage of white students (10-11%) compared to the surrounding schools. Kimbell also has extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 41.6% to 52.1% in recent years, much higher than the 14.7% to 54.1% seen at nearby schools. Academically, Kimbell students perform well below the Hillsborough district and Florida state averages on standardized tests, with only 13-30% proficient in ELA and Math compared to 49-56% for the district and 53-60% for the state.

Despite spending more per student ($12,867) than many nearby schools ($7,468 to $13,666 per student), Kimbell Elementary's academic performance remains the lowest in the area. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics and socioeconomic status, such as chronic absenteeism and effective resource allocation, may be contributing to the school's struggles. While Kimbell's performance has been consistently low, its 1-star rating in 2020-2021 indicates that there may be opportunities for improvement through targeted strategies and support.

Open Quote I have always loves kimbell.both my daughters went there and my son is still there.I have never had an issues until now.The new principle that has taken over this year is horrible. She has taken everything from the kids. They don't get any incentives for being good. There is no discipline in the school any more.Kids don't get in trouble if They act our or break things. The kids are destroying everything in the school. They run amuck every where. They leave classrooms and just roam around the school. The principle does not care. She treats the teachers and staff horrible.7 people have already quit this year and its only November. The school board needs to step in and get rid of the principle. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
