Despite receiving relatively high per-student spending, Monroe Middle Magnet School faces significant challenges. The school has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 43.8% to 48.4%, which is much higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, the school's test scores are consistently lower than the Hillsborough district and Florida state averages across various subjects and grade levels, with proficiency rates in FAST English Language Arts and Math 10-30 percentage points below the district and state. When compared to nearby middle schools in the Hillsborough district, Monroe Middle Magnet School generally performs worse on key metrics such as test scores, chronic absenteeism, and free and reduced lunch rates. However, the school's diverse student population, with a racial makeup that includes 25-28% White, 34-35% African American, and 24-28% Hispanic students, is not reflected in the nearby schools, which tend to have more homogeneous student populations. Open Quote A spanish teacher has inserted her own non-spanish content for your children's indoctrination by the left. Monroe parents should be outraged, what's next? My child is more privileged than yours based on her criteria? Shaming children is never appropriate.

Open Quote I have had two children in Monroe, with another one starting next year and I am extremely pleased with the school and staff. I've heard others voice their complaints but any issue I've had I've taken to the staff and it has been dealt with quickly and professionally. My children have loved it, they adore the teachers who make the effort to really connect with the kids and make the experience fun. This is a true case of don't judge a book by its cover. Open Quote Monroe is a gem in South Tampa. The buildings may be older but what's important is the teachers and they are truly dedicated to the students. The school has MacDill AFB as a partner as well as very good community and business support. The school was a state-rated "A" in 2008-2009. My children excelled at Monroe. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
