Westshore Elementary School

Summary:

Westshore Elementary School is a public elementary school in Tampa, Florida, serving 408 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Hillsborough School District, which is ranked 45 out of 68 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating.

Westshore Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (31.86%) and Hispanic (28.19%) students compared to nearby schools like Mabry Elementary, Grady Elementary, and Ballast Point Elementary. However, the school faces challenges, including significantly higher chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 28.1% in 2020-2021 to 41.2% in 2022-2023, which is much higher than the state and district averages. Academically, Westshore Elementary's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math are generally lower than the Hillsborough district and state averages, with its 5th-grade science proficiency rate at 34% in 2023-2024, compared to 47% for the district and 53% for the state.

Westshore Elementary's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 63.73% in 2022-2023 to 72.8% in 2020-2021, indicates a higher proportion of economically disadvantaged students. The school's spending per student has been higher than the nearby schools, ranging from $9,622 in 2021-2022 to $11,217 in 2022-2023. Despite the higher spending, Westshore Elementary's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 858 out of 2,064 Florida elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 1,514 out of 2,256 in 2023-2024, with a consistent 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. These challenges suggest potential areas for improvement, such as addressing chronic absenteeism and providing targeted academic interventions to support the unique needs of Westshore Elementary's diverse student population.

Open Quote Westshore was 4th in the district for writing 2013-2014 school year. They are currently an A school. My son achieved a 5 in Math and Reading on his FCAT. He is bright but the hard work of his teacher shined in his test scores. He has been at Westshore for 2 full school years. His baby sister will enter Kindergarten this year. I couldn't be happier with my CHOICE to place my children at Westshore. I believe that Westshore is the gem of South Tampa. It has a huge free and reduced lunch population but still continues to have the highest expectations for academics and behaviors you will find. Linda Drawdy's leadership is certainly something that should be studied and duplicated by others in the district. Close Quote

Open Quote 3 out of 4 kindergarten teachers delivered babies w/i weeks of each other. They were replaced with teachers who had little or no teaching experience. This shows extremely poor planning by administrators! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
