Cornerstone Classical Academy

Summary:

Cornerstone Classical Academy is a public charter school in Jacksonville, Florida that serves 770 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The school is part of the Duval school district, which is ranked 54th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Cornerstone Classical Academy stands out from nearby schools in several key ways. The school has a significantly higher percentage of white students (79.61%) compared to the more diverse student populations at surrounding schools. Academically, Cornerstone Classical Academy consistently outperforms the Duval district and the state of Florida in standardized test scores, with 83% of students proficient or better in Algebra 1 EOC compared to 56% for Duval and 55% for Florida. The school also has a much lower chronic absenteeism rate (12.3%) than nearby schools like Mt. Herman Ese Center (72.1%) and Jacksonville Classical Academy (28.7%). Additionally, Cornerstone Classical Academy has a very low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (0.39%), significantly lower than the surrounding schools.

The strong academic performance and unique student demographics of Cornerstone Classical Academy suggest that the school's educational approach and curriculum are effective in preparing students for success. However, the stark contrast in student racial makeup and socioeconomic status compared to nearby schools may warrant further investigation into the factors contributing to this disparity, such as school choice policies, transportation accessibility, or community demographics. While Cornerstone Classical Academy's success is impressive, it is important to consider the broader context of the Duval district's low ranking and the challenges faced by many of the surrounding schools, which serve more diverse and economically disadvantaged student populations.

Open Quote Our twice exceptional child with learning differences (SLD) made year over academic gains as measured by norm referenced standardized testing. CCA supported both sides of bell curve. My child has a complex neurological profile and CCA did a wonderful job at achieving growth while providing support. Our daughter had spent years in a specialized school for kids with learning differences out of necessity prior to being enrolled at CCA. This past year was her first in a more traditional classroom and we were very please with the classroom rigor and challenge for her as a gifted student as well as the support for her as a student needing special education. Our child asked to attend the district’s school for gifted this year. We supported her choice but she is now asking to go back to CCA because she feels she learned more there last year than she is in the districts gifted school this year. She also felt better supported at CCA. I would recommend this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
