Seaside Community Charter School

Summary:

Seaside Community Charter School is a public charter school serving grades K-8 in Jacksonville, Florida, within the Duval school district, which is ranked 54 out of 68 districts in the state. Despite generally outperforming the district and state on test scores, particularly in English Language Arts, Seaside Community Charter School has seen a significant decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from a high of 4 stars in 2015-2016 to just 2 stars in the current 2022-2023 school year.

One notable characteristic of Seaside Community Charter School is its significantly higher percentage of white students (73.39% in 2022-2023) compared to the surrounding schools, which have more diverse student populations. Additionally, the school has an extremely low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at just 0.62% in 2022-2023, much lower than the surrounding schools, which range from 29-63% free/reduced lunch. This suggests that Seaside Community Charter School may not be serving the lower-income families in the area as effectively as it could.

Another concerning trend at Seaside Community Charter School is the sharp rise in chronic absenteeism, which has increased from 12.7% in 2019-2020 to 37.7% in the current 2022-2023 school year. This is significantly higher than the surrounding schools, such as Duval Charter School At Mandarin, Mandarin Oaks Elementary School, and River City Science Academy At Mandarin. High absenteeism can have a significant impact on student learning and academic achievement, and this trend warrants further investigation by the school's leadership and the Duval school district.

Open Quote If you care about your child getting a good education, take them elsewhere. This school talks a good talk but they do not hold their faculty or staff accountable to the values and standards they publish on their website. This past year I've heard (thanks to Zoom) my child's teacher getting cross with very young students and even scolding them for things beyond their control, then refuse to apologize for it. I've also seen her tell students an assignment would not be graded, only to then go and grade it. The teacher just marches on with each class never revisiting struggle points for students either in whole group, small group, or one-on-one space so students are left behind. Moreover, we get no feedback on our student's assignments, which are often given with vague instructions and no grading rubric or criteria so she continues to get docked points without knowing how to improve. If you try to ask clarifying questions about the assignments, the teacher ignores you. If you try to express your concerns to the teacher, she ignores you. If you try to take it up with the school principal, he ignores you. If you try to take it up with the principal for all Seaside schools, he ignores you. If you try to take it up with the Board liaison, she ignores. Clearly, the only culture that is strictly adhered to at this school is that if you ignore a problem long enough, it will go away... so we are, to another school next year. Save yourself the same headache! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
